International FAQs
This week, I thought that I’d take a step back and chat travel basics. These are the questions I get nearly every time I have someone traveling internationally for the first time. Keep it on hand for your next trip!
Passports/Visas During our planning process, we’ll talk passports and visas for the country you’re traveling to. You can also check out travel.state.gov for up to date requirements. Also know that your passport MUST be valid for six months after your return date. This is a rule imposed by the US Government and airlines will always stick to this rule.
Local Currency I find the best way to get local currency is an ATM. But, before you travel, call your bank, make sure this is doable and inquire about any fees. Easy, right?
Credit Cards Another quick call or visit to your credit cards app. Let your credit card company know that you’ll be traveling! They’ll typically as for the dates and destination. Also ask about foreign transaction fees while you have them on the line. I’d also suggest bringing your main credit card and a back-up, just in case!
Cash I’m not a big cash spender at home, so it’s rare for me to bring a stack of bills on vacation. So, stick to this if you’re like me! I hate the idea of carrying cash around and the possibility of it getting lost or stolen. Credit cards are better for that extra security (and ability to close the account if lost or stolen!)
Tips The only thing I will bring small bills for are tips. Think drivers, luggage handlers, housekeeping, guides. A good guide is $1 to $5 per service.
Phone My rule is Airplane Mode as soon as I step foot on the plane or ship. As soon as I’m in destination I’ll connect to wifi, if I have to (aka work). But, it isn’t a bad idea to call your cell provider to inquire about international plans if you’ll be on land!
Got a question that I didn’t answer? Let me know! Do you follow any of these rules of thumb when traveling? Do you have a suggestion I can add to the list? Let me know and I might feature you in my next FAQ article or in my social channels!
