Flight delay tips
Since I can remember I’ve always had a fascination with flights - the service, brands, how they differed and how glamorous it was! Of course, things are very different now. It seemed appropriate that I ended up working at an online agency and dealt with a lot of flight bookings, issues, changes, complaints, etc. I’ve literally heard it all when it comes to this component of travel and sometimes share in your frustration as it can be a monster in and of itself! Keep in mind the following when weather (snow, sleet, rain) impacts your plans:
Change your flight - If bad weather is expected, attempt to change your flight with the airline. During most major weather events, airlines will issue a “waiver” to eliminate any change fees. This info is typically found on the airline website in a prominent location. Read the details of the advisory carefully to confirm the rule applies to your situation and routing. For example, my aunt and cousin were in Orlando for vaca last week but back home, Boston was expected to receive some snow. She contacted me to see if we could extend the stay, but because Delta didn’t have a policy in place for this particular storm, it was a no-go (unless she wanted to pay for the change out of pocket).
Be prepared - Just because a storm is hitting a certain area of the country doesn’t mean your flights won’t be impacted. Pack a carry on with essentials like your travel documents, medications, cell phone, charger, tablet, book/ereader. If you’ve got kids have some snacks ready along with coloring books, small toys and packable games. Also prep your phone with some flight tracking tools to keep an eye on gate changes, time changes, etc. I recommend FlightView and use it almost daily to track my clients when they’re flying! I also recommend LoungeBuddy, which sells passes to select airport lounges, even if you’re not flying business/first class!
Have someone to back you up - This is a pretty simple one. Flying can be stressful, so have an expert that has your back and can knowledgeably work with the airline on your behalf! After years of working flights, I’ve learned exactly what to say, when to say it and who to talk to for help or information….so leave the worry to me.
Be patient - Really! And remember that flight delays because of weather are out of your control, my control and the airline’s control!
Until next time!
