Avoid lost luggage

I think 2017 was a rough go for myself and my travelers, and the trend seemed to be one thing...lost luggage.  I’m definitely putting out the good vibes for 2018, but here are some quick tips to consider, just in case…

Stock your carry on with the essentials. I’m talking your travel documents, identification, electronics, and anything else of value. Throw in a complete change of clothing and a toiletries bag with one of everything, just in case - toothbrush, paste, deodorant, sunscreen, etc. I love hitting up the trial size aisle before a trip, you never know what you might find!

Cross pack your checked bags.  I’ll admit, I’m a stickler for organization and order when packing my luggage. Everything has its place. So this tip goes against everything that’s in my nature. But it totally makes sense - pack half of one suitcase for him, half for her and repeat with suitcase two. If one of the two goes missing, there’ll be no problems.

Keep photo files.  Snap a photo of your suitcase, all sides, plus interior. It can’t hurt to do the same with the contents. Or, if you’re like me and a list maker, snap a pic of your packing list as well. If for some reason you need to make a luggage claim, you have an accurate account of everything and hopefully it’ll speed up the process.

Tag it.  Please please please use a heavy duty bag tag on your checked bags. Keep away from anything paper or flimsy plastic that can tear or rip easily. As mentioned in a previous article, throw a business card or info on a piece of paper inside as backup.  PS - I usually just put my name, email and phone, for security purposes. No addresses.

Follow the airlines rules. Believe it or not there are a slew of rules with regards to lost luggage! Who knew! The first place to start is by filing a claim, at the airport, in the baggage office, upon arrival and realization bags are a no show. Know that there are certain time frames that must be followed (as dictated by the airlines) or requests are pretty much void.

Hope these tips help!  If you have any suggestions, let me know and I’ll try out on my trip in September! I’ll report back with my findings!
